The Power of Silence
“Listen to Silence. It has so much to say.” -Rumi
When was the last time you consciously gave yourself the gift of silence? I know, in our fast paced world, it is often not easy to find. But it is possible. I walked into a grove of redwoods the other day and was bathed in silence. Deep, penetrating, nourishing. I could feel my nervous system unwinding, stress melting away like snow in the warmth of the sun.
As a sound healer and spiritual mentor, I am deeply aware of the benefit of cultivating an intimate relationship with silence. Why? Because in the stillness of silence we have access to wisdom that might otherwise be drowned out by the cacaphony of thoughts, noise, distractions of various kinds and all the stimulation that we are exposed to in our day to day life. When we take the time to enter into silence, whether it is meditating, taking a walk in a quiet place in nature, unplugging from devices and tuning into our breath, we commit to slowing down for a moment. We commit to deep listening with all of our senses to what is underneath the surface activity of our lives. We commit to connecting to ourselves and the world around us in a very different way. We commit to “being” rather than doing.
Silence offers us a way to connect with a sense of inner spaciousness. And when we tap into that feeling, the pressure of the “to dos” lessens. With the decrease of internal pressure comes a more tangible sense of relaxation. And when we feel relaxed, we can experience a whole new perspective on any situation that may be puzzling or challenging us.
Give yourself the gift of silence. I can assure you that the benefit will be well worth it.
